Every job I ever had involved a substantial amount of writing…whether it be business proposals, software specs, sales letters, catalog copy, or marketing brochures. I didn't necessarily plan it that way. It's just how things happened. For over 18 years, writing has played a significant role in my professional and personal success.
I realized I had a talent for writing in high school (a long time ago). I liked purposeful writing and had aspirations of becoming a reporter. But the news arena didn't offer enough creativity for me so I decided that advertising copywriting was the ticket. I graduated with a degree in Advertising Journalism from the prestigious University of Missouri-Columbia. Upon graduation, I paid my dues selling advertising with a nationally-known news organization. Used my advertising writing skills. Learned a lot. Then moved on.
Technology advanced and the Internet came along. I was awestruck. Believing that educating the prospect is the basis for all effective marketing communication, I decided to pursue an advanced degree in educational communication and technology from New York University. While working towards my Master’s, I was employed by a software company. I started in sales, was promoted to the Internet division, then progressed to development. I cultivated such an interest in Web technology, I jumped at the chance to work for a Web development agency when they came calling. I did a lot to expand the business, whether it was through employee development, marketing efforts, or new business recruitment endeavors. That experience was a great training ground and set the stage for the formation of my writing business, MOD Interactive.
I have been on my own as a freelance copywriter for almost seven years now; loving every minute of it. I get to learn about different businesses, interact with many different people, and do something that I find truly rewarding. Plus I make my clients look good. That’s the icing on the cake!
